Pompidou Centre: What to Expect
One of the most unique buildings in the city, the Pompidou Centre is certainly of Paris' 'must-see' galleries. In this article we'll take a look at how such an unorthodox gallery became an important part of the Modern Art world.
A Little Background Information
The Centre officially opened its doors in 1977. It was named in honour of former French President, Georges Pompidou. He was instrumental in its creation, as the project was initiated by him in 1969. However, he passed away in 1974, and he did not live to see the opening.
In the beginning, there were 681 submissions for the centre's architectural design competition. At the time, Paris wanted something new! Two unknown architects Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano won the prized opportunity. At the time, their theme was considered highly unconventional. For instance, the scaffolding, pipes, and elevators are displayed on the outside of the building. As a result, some say that the structure is a work of Modern Art. On the other hand, many people think it's awful! In the end, whether you love it or hate it, the Pompidou is unforgettable!
Modern Art Gallery
The Pompidou has over 100,000 iconic works of art in their collection. Its main focus is on Modern Art from the 20th and 21st centuries.
The Pompidou's collection is classified as follows:
The Modern Collection (from 1905 to the 1960s)
The Contemporary Collection (from the 1960s to the 1990s)
Contemporary and Progressive Creation (from the 1990s onwards)
Library and Cultural Centre
The Kandinsky Library is located on the third floor of the Pompidou Centre. It is named after famed Russian painter and art theorist, Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky.
In addition, the Centre hosts many cultural events including lectures, theatrical and dance performances, workshops, film screenings, musical performances, as well as conferences. Also, they offer different programs for children and teenagers.
