A brief history of the Paris Metro

The Paris Metro is more than just a way to get around – it is a symbol of the city’s innovation and charm. Opened in 1900, the Metro was designed to help Parisians navigate the bustling city during the Exposition Universelle, a world’s fair that drew millions of visitors. The first line ran from Porte Maillot to Porte de Vincennes, and it was an instant success.

Inspired by the rapid transit systems in London and New York, Paris wanted its own underground network – but with a distinctly French flair. Architect Hector Guimard gave the Metro its iconic Art Nouveau entrances, many of which still stand today as cultural landmarks. These elegant, curved designs have become synonymous with Parisian style.

Over the decades, the system expanded rapidly. By the 1930s, it had become one of the most extensive networks in the world. Today, the Paris Metro boasts 16 lines, over 300 stations, and serves more than 4 million passengers every day. It’s known for its reliability, frequency, and dense coverage, making it one of the easiest ways to explore the city.

What makes the Metro unique isn’t just its efficiency – it’s the way it blends history with modernity. From vintage tiled corridors and original signage to sleek new trains and digital ticketing, every ride offers a glimpse into Paris’s evolving story.

Whether you're commuting or sightseeing, hopping on the Metro is like stepping into a living museum – one that is always moving and always unmistakably Parisian.
