Sweet Dreams Are Made of Cheese: A Delicious Guide to French Cheese

By Megan Hills

While in Paris, indulge in some of the country's best produce, with our guide to French cheese!

The stories about Parisian cuisine are all true - it's absolutely delicious. We've compiled a little guide to our favourite French cheeses, ranging from the popular to little known treasures, and included a few fromageries where you can try them out yourself. Image via Pinterest

Comté

Named after the region Franche-Comt’e where it hails from, this cheese is popular with many in France. Made from unpasteurised cow’s milk and heated in cylinders, it can frequently be found at many fromageries in Paris. Some of the best places to purchase it include Pascal Trotte and Laurent Dubois. Roquefort

This strong blue cheese can tend to divide people, but it’s been said to help prevent heart disease for its anti-flammatory properties. Made in the south of France in the caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon, it’s a popular choice for people who prefer stronger flavours and crafted from sheep’s milk. Image via Pinterest

Camembert

Beloved all over the world, this mellow soft cheese is perfect when baked in the oven and served with a warm baguette. Only cheese produced in Normandy can lay claim to this title and the process is a relatively quick one, aging cow’s milk for around a month. Image via Pinterest

Cantal

This delicious cheese is made from both raw and pasteurised milk with a sharp, tangy taste similar to cheddar. Ranging from slightly softer to harder consistencies, it comes from Auvergne and goes well in salads, fondue and other recipes. For an unforgettable ham and cheese sandwich, head to Chez Alain Miam Miam in Marche des Enfants Rouge where thick slices of melted cantal ooze out of the sides. Image via SeriousEats

Gruyére

Another popular cheese globally, Gruyere is known for its strong, distinctive nutty taste. This hard cheese is frequently used to make one of Paris’ most iconic dishes: the croque monsieur, a grown up grilled cheese sandwich. Image via Pinterest

Brie

The most mellow cheese on the list, brie has an incredibly soft texture and comes from the French town Brie. There’s no end of variations on this crowd-pleasing cheese with additions like herbs, truffles and more sold all over Paris. Sold as a wheel or in wedges, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a supermarket that doesn’t stock it. Image via Pinterest

Époisses de Bourgogne

Prepare to hold your breath for this one, this runny cheese is so smelly that you’ll have to break open the windows after digging in. Easily identified by its vivid burnt orange exterior, it’s made from cow’s milk in the town it takes its name from. Image via Pinterest

Saint Nectaire

Created in the mountainous region of Auvergne, this semi-soft cheese is fantastic when you find one of great quality. Stray away from supermarket versions and the dairy variety of this cheese, you’re going to want to opt for the more mature farm option for a more delicious experience. Image via Boursin facebook

Boursin

This soft, spreadable cheese is made from cow's milk and frequently flavoured with herbs and garlic. Created in Normandy by a man of the same name, this fresh cheese is popular all over the world and sold at most supermarkets. Image via Pinterest

Pont L'eveque

Aged for roughly six weeks, this soft cow's milk cheese is one of the oldest in France. Believed to have been popular with monks in Normandy, it has a rich yet mild taste and makes a great addition to any wine and cheese night.

Paris, mon amour!

There’s no better place to celebrate Valentine’s Day than in the city of love itself. If you’re lucky enough to be spending the most romantic day of the year in Paris, then you’ve done well already! It’s no secret or surprise why Paris is one of the most popular destinations for this time of year, so here’s your very own Valentine’s Day itinerary for you and your loved one to enjoy the 14th February. 9am – 12pm Start your day up in Montmartre, the highest summit of the city. There’s no place like it in the Paris, it is its own little town high up on the hill and a must-go if you want polished quirkiness. Once home to some of the most brilliant artists of all time, the streets are lined with independent boutiques, cafes, patisseries and restaurants – perfect for a spot of brunch to start your day. You can’t leave the area without visiting the oh-so-romantic Wall of I Love Yous in all languages of the world. It’s a lovely way to start your Valentine’s Day tour, and a definite selfie-worthy opportunity. Don’t miss out the Sacré Coeur and its breath-taking views over Paris before you move on, either. 12pm – 3pm Head down into the area below Montmartre, to Boulevard de Clichey specifically, where you’ll find the famous Moulin Rouge and its modern equivalent seedy XXX shops. Potentially something for the younger, more adventurous crowd, but worth browsing while you’re there! Next stop is the Musée Maillol, one of the lesser known Paris museums, to continue the naughtiness a little longer. Their current exhibition is Kissing in the Arts which looks at the presentation of kissing in art throughout the ages, from the Renaissance to the present day. So get ready to pucker up, it’ll get you in the mood! 3pm – 6pm Cross over the (cliché but cool) Pont des Arts, believed to be the most romantic bridge in Paris because of its love locks. Technically now you’re not allowed to lock your own as the bridge is actually sinking under the weight of them... Despite this, it makes for a lovely photo nonetheless! Another must on your romantic tour, which coincides nicely with a mid-afternoon pick me up, is sampling one of the city’s finest macaroons. The great debate is whether Ladurée or Pierre Hermé are the best in town, so why not try both and make your mind up yourself. Make sure you allow room for dinner though, as a candle lit meal is a must. 6pm – Late You can’t beat a Parisian sunset over the River Seine on Valentine’s Day. But what’s even better is a romantic river cruise with Bateaux Parisiens, who are offering three exclusive packages for you to choose from – all including champagne, a well know aphrodisiac! So put on your glad rags and enjoy a slap up experience starting at the iconic Eiffel Tower and winding down past Notre Dame and the Musee Orsay, some of Paris’ most famous landmarks. Once you’re back on dry land Paris has plenty of Valentine’s Day options to take you through the night – including Anti-Valentine’s ones at that if you’re championing the single life! We recommend a cabaret show at the Lido for some late night titillation (pardon the pun).

Tour the best bits of Paris by boat, bus and bike

There are plenty of Paris tours to join in on your visit to the city (don't pretend you're not keen on trying at least one of them!) and we know how hard it seems to fit everything in in one go, no matter how organised your itinerary. Often a sightseeing tour is the best way to tick off all the sights in one go. Paris isn’t short of a tour or two, and most come highly recommended as a way of exploring the city. We decided to look at our favourite ways of enjoying the city from the comfort of a seat. Well, perhaps the latter might be subject to opinion... Paris Bus Tour The Big Bus Tour in Paris is one of the most popular Paris tours and a great way to get around Paris if you’re on a tight time frame. Passing Paris’ most iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Paris Opera House, it gives you plenty of opportunities to hop on and off over nine stops at key locations across the city. There’s nothing more fun than sitting upon an open top double decker watching the world go by and listening to interesting facts about this historic city. A bus tour is a great thing to do to spot lesser known monuments and smaller attractions around Paris; things you might miss should you be travelling by metro, for example. If you decide to stay on the bus you can take the full 2hr 15min tour and pass all the sites from the comfort of your seat, including the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, and Grand Palais. Here you can also hop off and explore these sites at your leisure and get on again in a few hours. Plus there are great eateries and patisseries hidden around the streets of Paris that you might want to make a pit stop at while you're there... Seine River Cruise Paris by river is an experience missed by many, but we can testify that it’s a great thing to do – and you’ll probably want to do it all over again when it’s over! Travelling up the River Seine in Paris is a must-do when you’re talking about Paris tours. Did you know the banks of the River Seine was added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991? It’s not surprising as they are lined with some of Paris’ most famous and important historical buildings, which from the water you can see at a totally unique vantage point. Unlike the bus tour, the Bateaux Parisiens River Cruise is an hour long tour that goes the length of the central Paris stretch, from the Eiffel Tower, all the way down to Notre Dame Cathedral and the spectacular Orsay Museum. Seeing Paris from the river is a breath-taking way of touring Paris and on a lovely, clear day you can’t beat it, away from the busy traffic and populated streets. It’s a serene hour break and a totally unique experience! Look out for the statue of the soldier under Pont Alma, who is used by weather men as a marker to measure the volume of the river by how wet his boots/cuffs/trousers are on a daily basis! Bike & Segway Tours For something more hands-on and involved, have you ever thought of exploring Paris by bike, or even Segway? These two-wheeled vehicles are a great way of exploring the city allowing you to be at the helm and in the driver's seat, as it were. Best done in the warmer weather, perhaps, these tours are a great way of combining a bit of activity and sightseeing. If you fancy your chances among the Parisian roads and pavements, navigating your way through the cobbled side streets and onto the famous rues that run through Paris then sign up to a Fat Tire Bike Tour. It's a far more intimate tour experience where you’ll be guided by an expert tour guide and shown around the famous monuments and landmarks of Paris, learning of historic secrets and fascinating Paris insights. If you’re worried about health and safety, or have small kids, don’t worry – you’re fully kitted out with helmets and you go in a group with a leader who takes you along a pre-assigned route. Stopping for the all-important photo-taking opportunities (and a breather!) as well as to ask of those all-important touristy questions, at the end of the tour you’ll feel like you know Paris like the back of your hand!
