Paris’s is so recognisable thanks to the number of historic monuments and landmarks that sit along the horizon. These buildings represent significant historic events such as military victories and modern urban and economic development.
One of the most important monuments – and most popular – is the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs Elysees. Not only is this one of the most photographed buildings in Paris, but it’s one of the most significant in terms of Paris’ social history. This triumphal arch was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 and was to commemorate the brave French soliders and the eternal flame burns above the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier today. The Arc de Triomphe also commands great views over Paris from the top of the viewing platform – one not to be missed!
Another top Paris monument and landmark on your bucket list should be the Panthéon. This historic neoclassical building, holds the tombs of some of the most illustrious French intellectuals of all time and its façade is reminiscent of that of the ancient Pantheon in Rome. Among those buried in its necropolis are Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo and Émile Zola.
Visit Paris’ only skyscraper, the Montparnasse Tower, for unparalleled 360° views over Paris. On a clear day you can see up to 40kms away from the 56th-floor observation deck. Take in the panorama of central Paris and see the River Seine, Eiffel Tower, Tuileries and Les Invalides – as well as other important landmarks marking Paris’s horizon. If you visit at dusk, see the city fall beneath the shadows and light up for a really memorable experience. Don’t forget your camera!
The Arc de Triomphe is perhaps the most iconic of all French monuments. It is at once instantly recognisable and deeply evocative of the military glories and follies of France.
The Panthéon is an impressive and imposing neoclassical edifice in which the remains of the most illustrious Frenchmen and women are kept and their deeds remembered.
Discover Paris from the top of the Montparnasse Tower which offers visitors a stunning view of the city in all directions.
